Nation's top two recruiting classes headed for Triangle?

If the experts are right, the top two women’s basketball recruiting classes in the country could well be coming to the Triangle in the fall.

All Star Girls Report ranks UNC’s four-player recruiting class
as the best in the nation, while Duke’s quartet is ranked No. 2 by Blue Star Report.

The Tar Heels’ class includes Diamond DeShields of Norcross, Ga.; Allisha Gray of Sandersville, Ga.; Stephanie Mavunga of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Jessica Washington of Tulsa, Okla. All four are ranked in the top 14 of the class by the All Star Girls Report.

The 6-6 wing DeShields — daughter of Major League veteran Delino DeShields - is ranked No. 2 by ASGR, the 6-4 forward Mavunga No. 4, the 6-foot guard Gray No. 7, and the 5-8 point guard Washington No. 14.

"This is an exciting day for our program," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "The addition of these four young ladies to our current roster immediately makes us a contender for national championships for years to come. They are outstanding athletes who fit our style of play, but more importantly they are all great students who will be great ambassadors for our University."

Duke has signed Oderah Chidom of Oakland, Calif.; Kendall Cooper of Carson, Calif.; Rebecca Greenwell of Owensboro, Ky.; and Kianna Holland of Seneca, S.C. All four are ranked 23rd or higher by at least one national ranking service.

The 6-1 guard Greenwell is ranked No. 4 by Girls Basketball Report, the 6-4 forward Chidom No. 8 by All Star Girls report and Girls Basketball Report, the 6-7 post Cooper No. 9 by Blue Star, and the 5-9 guard Holland No. 23 by Girls Basketball Report.

“It is just amazing the kind of people they are,” Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “The values they have, the excitement about coming to Duke and their families are wonderful. It is an amazing group of student-athletes and an amazing group of parents as well. They fit right in; they did from the very beginning with our team and our staff.”
