Duke gets yet another tough challenge to its unbeaten streak and No. 3 ranking in women’s basketball tonight.
Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie will look for her 100th victory as the Blue Devils’ mentor tonight, and the Devils have a ridiculous 31-game winning streak in the series. But while the Devils (17-0, 3-0) will be favorites, they certainly won’t be prohibitive favorites.
“ACC women’s basketball this year is the best it’s ever been, for a long time across the board,” McCallie said on Thursday at her press luncheon. “When you’re looking at the teams, there are so many teams that can make a difference and every team is so valued. It’s amazing, and I’m thrilled that we played the schedule we did, because it has prepared us quite nicely for what we face night-in and night-out in our league.”
And McCallie said MaChelle Joseph’s Yellow Jackets are definitely among the teams that could upset Duke if they’re
“Georgia Tech is really good,” McCallie said. “It’s the best Georgia Tech team I’ve ever coached against, by far. Because Montgomery is as good a guard as there is anywhere on any team. And this freshman, No. 15, Marshall, is just absolutely incredible. She plays like a junior.
“Their guard play is exceptional. Their post play is steady for them, but they’re so aggressive. They press, they press, they press, they run, they run, they run and they come at you. And nobody presses like they do. Nobody. And they’re very athletic — (Joseph) has got some new kids off the bench. They tend to play six, they’re not overly deep, but they play exceptionally hard. We’re excited and expect an incredible battle.”
