First-inning spree lifts Huntsville over Mudcats

The Carolina Mudcats’ homestand didn’t get off on the right foot Thursday night.

The visiting Huntsville Stars dropped a four-spot on Travis Webb (2-4) in the first inning, holding on for a 5-3 victory in the opener of a five-game series at Five County Stadium.

Carolina’s big blow was a two-run homer from Mike Costanzo in the bottom of the inning.

Chris Cody (3-6) was the winning pitcher for the Stars, who got three hits including a pair of doubles from Brett Lawrie.

Dave Sappelt added an RBI double and Devin Mesoraco a double for the Mudcats.
