Today, the Carolina Railhawks announced the signing of midfielder Tiyiselani “Ty” Shipalane. Shipalane is a 25-year-old South African who began his professional career in 2006 playing three season with the Michigan Bucks of the USL Premier Development League. In 2009, he joined the Harrisburg City Islanders, where he scored six goals in 18 appearances and was named USL-2 Rookie of the Year.
Shipalane signed with D.C. United of MLS last December, but never made an appearance for the club in league play. After a one match loan to the Richmond Kickers, United released Shipalane last month.
The RailHawks also announced that both Shipalane and midfielder Sainey Touray will be loaned out to Harrisburg for two games this weekend before rejoining the RailHawks next week. Touray, who made a short-lived scoring splash upon his arrival at the RailHawks’ training camp this season, returns from a ten-week recovering following a torn hamstring he suffered during a preseason scrimmage against UNC-Chapel Hill. Both of these weekend loans appear aimed at improving each player's match fitness while the RailHawks complete the final leg of their four-game road trip at Portland and Vancouver.
In the meantime, RailHawks fans can preview the club’s latest signing with this YouTube video from March of 2008, in which Shipalane purports to show off his “freestyle mad skills":
