The tens of thousands of you who used to subscribe to the Durham Herald-Sun might remember me.
I was a sportswriter there for 24 years, covering just about everything from the Durham Bulls to N.C. Central football and basketball to the Carolina Hurricanes to women's basketball at Duke and UNC to high school sports to spot coverage at N.C. State to USA Baseball and gosh knows what else.
But back on May 15, Paxton Media Group-which owns dozens of itsy-bitsy newspapers scattered throughout the Midwest and Southeast-decided to cancel that show and send eight or nine good, loyal employees packing along with me.
(Fiona Morgan interviewed me about it by phone a few days later when I was on an instant, impromptu and inexpensive visit-the-family vacation with my wife and our two-year-old daughter).
Apparently it was our fault they had lost nearly half their circulation in the 3 1/2 years since those Kentucky Paxton trust-fund babies bought the paper from the local Rollins trust-fund babies. At least all the suits still have their jobs, eh?
Whatever. With apologies to Sir Paul, "La, la, la, la life goes on ..."
I once counted 22 sports I had touched on at least once, including a few during my seven years at three other newspapers that never fired me.
(Their circulation didn't drop like a rock during the time I was at any of those places either. So what's the variable in all this? I hope the Indy giving me a chance to write for them isn't their version of jumping the shark. I need those special sections at primary and non-partisan election time, right?)
Anyway, I've done just about everything you can legally do in a press box, from Stanley Cup Finals and World Series and NCAA championships down to Little League Baseball and church league softball, for heaven's sake. (And I've eaten far too many hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue sandwiches and pieces of pizza and fried chicken.)
So when I noticed that Triangle Offense was looking for new writers, I decided to send in my online application.
I hope I can keep up. No joke.
For now, I'm going to be covering the Carolina Mudcats and USA Baseball this summer and add some once-in-a-blue-moon posts on the Bulls. Then come college football and basketball and the cycle starts again.
If they want to keep me around.
