Public schools in Wake, Orange and Durham counties will now be closed Thursday and Friday in preparation for the havoc Hurricane Florence is expected to wreak when it thrashes the coast Friday morning and works its way inland. Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools will be closed all day Thursday and Friday as well.

The Wake County Public School System announced this afternoon schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, after initially announcing an early dismissal for Thursday. All after-school activities Thursday and Friday are canceled. Sunday’s Wake County college fair is also canceled.

“The safety of our students, parents, and staff remains our top priority,” WCPSS said in a statement.

Alerts will be sent out to parents through phone calls, texts, and emails should the schedule change.

Durham Public Schools had also planned on letting students out early Thursday, but will instead close both Thursday and Friday. After school activities, including sports, are also called off.

CHCCS schools will close Thursday and Friday and all weekend events would be canceled. The district encouraged parents to download its app or follow it on Twitter or Facebook for further updates. Orange County schools will also be out on Thursday and Friday.

N.C. State has canceled classes beginning noon Wednesday. UNC canceled classes beginning at 5:00 p.m. tonight, and Duke canceled classes starting at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.
