Durham PD Identifies Man Killed in Shooting, Officers Involved

The Durham Police Department identified the man fatally shot by officers Wednesday night as thirty-seven-year-old Shaun Jeffery Christy.

In a statement this afternoon, the agency also announced that two officers in the patrol division — Cpl B.M. Glover and Officer G.F. Paschall — have been placed on administrative leave following the shooting, per standard procedure.

Glover joined the Durham Police Department in January 2006 and Paschall in February 2015.
According to the police department, officer encountered Christy just after eight p.m.  in the parking lot of the New Hope Commons Shopping Center after receiving a call from the Orange County Sheriff's Office that "an armed suicidal man was driving a red pick-up truck in the vicinity."

Officers said he "displayed a handgun and pointed it at them, which caused the officers to fire their weapons," according to the statement.

"It's a very tragic situation and one we hope will never be repeated," Mayor Steve Schewel said during a City Council meeting Thursday afternoon.
