Last week, downtown Raleigh citizens group the Downtown Living Advocates (DLA) posted this image to its Facebook page
with the caption "The rumor is apparently true. Glenwood South will be home to a Publix Grocery Store. Residents rejoice!"
On Facebook, residents did rejoice at the prospect of a grocery store finally coming to downtown, to be located in a warehouse on its northern end on North West Street which is currently the home of the Southland Ballroom
and ThemeWorks .
North Hills developer John Kane and real estate veteran J. Cross Williams purchased that property and other buildings at the corner of West and Harrington Streets for for $4.6 million, according to this February report from the Triangle Business Journal.
If the move were to happen, it would involve rerouting Harrington Street (expected as part of the Peace Street bridge replacement project
) and building a West Johnson Street extension, also in the works.
Messages left with Kane and Williams have not been returned and a Publix spokesperson would not confirm that the Florida grocery giant has an approved site in downtown Raleigh. The spokesperson added that Publix doesn't typically comment on proposed locations, only those where it has signed a lease.
DLA also hasn't responded to the INDY's request seeking more information.
At the State of Downtown Raleigh event at the Raleigh Convention Center Tuesday, David Diaz, president of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance said that a grocery store "is coming to downtown Raleigh."
DRA Planning and development manager Bill King said the details of which grocery store, and where it will be located, have not yet been worked out.
