N.C. Senate President Phil Berger tried to cleverly brand President Obama as a hypocrite, regarding his stated opposition to HB 2.

"Tried" is the operative word. It was "clever," only if you think a familiar right-wing zinger about Secret Service protection qualifies for that description.

Obama made his position clear at a joint press conference in London with British Prime minister David Cameron. The U.K recently issued a travel warning about anti-LGBT laws in Mississippi and North Carolina.

Addressing a reporter's question about that, Obama said "the people of North Carolina and Mississippi are wonderful people. They are hospitable people. They are beautiful states. And you are welcome to come and enjoy yourselves."

But.

"I also think the laws that were passed there are wrong," he added, "and should be overturned."

Here's video of the president's full remarks, courtesy of WRAL:

That inspired predictable social media backlash, such as this point from Twitterer JmzMadison:

Not to be outdone, Berger offered his own "boom" statement:

Ah, that line between clever and stupid gets thinner all the time, doesn't it? Supposedly, the Secret Service checks Malia's and Sasha's classmates for "gender compliance" now.

But Berger's just following an old right-wing script that usually gets dusted off when Obama talks about gun violence in the U.S. You guessed it: He should shut up about it because he receives armed Secret Service protection. That one likely inspires a lot of adjacent-urinal high-fives in the men's rooms at Fox News.

Anyway. Try again, senator. Lame.
