A volunteer at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem went on a violent, unhinged, maybe racially motivated rant at a father and another woman who say they were just sitting in a waiting room with their kids, having a friendly conversation before their appointments Thursday afternoon.
"We need some help, there's something wrong with this volunteer, she's in here acting a fool, she's already called me a n——-," says Isaiah Baskins, who captured the woman's outburst in video footage he shot on his phone. "Lady, what are you doing?"
The volunteer seems inordinately upset about "gray underwear" and gets in Baskins's face while yelling at him and the other woman to "get their shit" out of the waiting room. I'm pretty sure that she then calls the woman a "dirty tramp."
Here's the six-minute video Baskins shot. To be fair, no one involved here comes off looking especially awesome. Sadly, Baskins and the woman's children witnessed the entire incident.
Baskins has not yet responded to our request for comment, but you can get a pretty good idea of his version of events from the video.
Eventually, Baskins and the other woman leave the waiting room and security officers step in to diffuse the situation.
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center sent us the following response to the video Friday afternoon:
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is shocked and appalled at the behavior demonstrated by our volunteer in this video. We deeply regret this and have apologized to those affected by this behavior. This behavior does not reflect our identity or our values. This individual is no longer a volunteer with our organization. Wake Forest Baptist is dedicated to providing an inclusive environment for all, with respect, dignity and compassion. This commitment is unwavering and reinforced every day by our dedicated faculty and staff.
