N.C. Division of Veterans Affairs receive ominous email tonight

Lawmakers were still clapping at 8:25 this evening, one minute after Gov. Pat McCrory had finished his State of the State address, when Division of Veterans Affairs employees received an ominous email from Bill Daughtridge, Secretary of Administration.

In the brief letter obtained by the INDY, Daughtridge warned employees of an "impending change" at the Department of Administration that would ship Veterans Affairs and several unnamed agencies to other departments.

During the governors' address, McCrory alluded to realignments and efficiencies in state government, including the DOA. However, he did not explicitly detail these changes except saying that he would expand government—yes, a Republican making government bigger—to create another cabinet-level position for information technology.

It's unclear how these changes at DOA will affect employees within the various divisions. But it is clear that the timing of the email, was at the very least, bad for morale. A lot of Veterans Affairs workers are probably losing sleep tonight.
