The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has released its latest assessment of the Durham Housing Authority (DHA), and the news is not good. The agency labeled the DHA "troubled" after identifying several problems in its handling of the city's affordable housing, specifically its management of the Section 8 program, reports WRAL.
DHA Chief Operating Officer Sonny McMahand told the Triangle Tribune that the review is based on last year's records, and that he expects the agency's 2008 report to reveal significant improvement. But based on his quotes to the Tribune last week, there's at least one Durham City Councilman whose patience with the agency seems to have already worn thin.
Said Councilman Eugene Brown, "I think it's an embarrassment. How many times does it take for them to get things right?"
