After an absence of almost a decade, Blackbeard’s Lost Weekend, a once-reliable garage-rock bacchanal, returned to Chapel Hill last year
. Stretching across three nights and as many stages—two at The Cave and one at Nightlight—the resurrected Lost Weekend boasted almost forty bands
and a casual vibe that belied the garage-rock frenzy the bill promised on paper.
It was a welcome comeback, and a reunion of sorts for a scene that had continued to grow without its annual convention. Tonight, the tradition continues, with a bill pared down to twenty acts, on two stages and two nights. And, though the lot is smaller, it’s no less potent. Chapel Hill’s Flesh Wounds promise a frenzy of garage-punk that imagines The Oblivians on a Killed By Death comp. Greensboro’s Totally Slow hit the sweet spot between punk and indie, evoking memories of Archers of Loaf and Jawbreaker. SOON merges shoegaze sweep with mantra-metal
for a heavy-psych stunner. And Wahyas—helmed by Blackbeard’s primary organizer, Joshua Johnson—keeps it real with spartan garage-blues.
While this year’s Lost Weekend might have shrunk in scope, its new parameters only promise improvements. There’s no work-on-Monday drag of a Sunday night finale. Keeping the party at The Cave ought to keep the crowd from wandering, too. And narrowing down the bill leaves energy reserves to be spent—hopefully granting this Lost Weekend a welcome intensity.
