With the announcement of next year’s Moogfest already casting a 100-plus-act shadow over Durham’s three-year-old Art of Cool Festival, the homegrown jazz and soul spree can’t afford too many more setbacks before next May. But early this morning, Art of Cool announced an unfortunate lineup change for next year’s event: Due to “unforeseen circumstances,” Detroit soul singer Dwele will not be performing at 2016 Art of Cool Festival.

Dwele was originally slated to headline the festival’s Saturday slot at Carolina Theatre. His position has since been filled by The Internet and Moonchild, both of whom were already scheduled to perform at the festival before Dwele’s cancellation.

“We are saddened to lose Dwele from our schedule,” Art of Cool Festival president Cicely Mitchell said in a statement. “However, we are pleased that Moonchild and The Internet have already toured and performed together, so The Internet fans will easily recognize the pairing.”

In better news, Art of Cool announced that Grammy-winning singer, producer and keyboardist PJ Morton, of Maroon 5 fame, will be its Sunday VIP Brunch performer. Last year’s VIP brunch headliner, Avery Sunshine, capped off a successful festival weekend in illuminating fashion. Surely, a valued musician like Morton, who has also rocked with Lil’ Wayne, Jazmine Sullivan and Stevie Wonder, will do much the same.

For a fun dose of 2016 Art of Cool Festival’s other performers, The Art of Cool Project will be providing the music for this weekend’s Free Family Sundae event at CAM in Raleigh, with DJ Forge spinning tunes from noon until 2 p.m. and the Al Strong Trio performing from 2–5 p.m.
