Clubs & Concerts

When: Wed., Dec. 31 2014

The Art of Cool offers a night of pleasures and surprises. Detroit-born Lorenzo Ferguson, known as Zo!, headlines the night. Zo! now hails from Silver Spring, Maryland, but he often records with Phonte Coleman's The Foreign Exchange in the Triangle and pulls a lot of other local musicians into his tunes, too. They hit all the requisite New Year's notes. You can dance with a drink in your hand to the casual covers he offers on the EP ...just visiting three, including a smooth take on Steely Dan's "Black Cow" and a funkier version of Wham!'s "Everything She Wants," which eventually morphs into Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time." Then, for the post-ball-drop revelry, Zo! offers the more upbeat fare of his recent ManMade, which features a shot of downtown Durham's ramshackle Brazing and Welding Works on its cover. 10:30 p.m., $40–$50, 804 Old Fayetteville St., Durham, 919-806-6084, theartofcoolproject.com. —Chris Vitiello
