Young Cardinals, Blanko Basnet

When: Thu., Nov. 21, 9:30 p.m. 2013

As local rock bands go, Blanko Basnet and Young Cardinals exist in especially separate scenes and with very different styles. From Durham, Blanko Basnet is a sinewy indie rock act, with Joe Hall's trademark guitar lines feathered by harmonies and paralleled by intense rhythmic shifts. From Raleigh, Young Cardinals are a blustery three-piece, with riffs that stretch to AC/DC and a nouveau blues-rock that suggests the ascension of The Black Keys. You might not expect them to share a two-band bill.

But such pairings are just the intention of Craig Reed, who took over booking duties for Tir Na Nog's popular Local Band–Local Beer concerts after the departure of founder Chris Tamplin in September.

"I like a lot of music. My friends like a lot music. And I don't want the series to be only one sound or subset of the music scene," says Reed, a recent N.C. State graduate and the owner of the production company Younger Brother. "The series has been around for a long time, and it's a brand in the Triangle, but I see a lot of things that we could be doing better and more of."

To date, that means incorporating a high degree of genre diversity. Reed's first Local Band–Local Beer show even included a jam band headliner, a first for the series.

"I want to bring together musicians who are doing slightly different things but have some similar roots," he says. "Then we can cross-pollinate their crowds." —Grayson Haver Currin
