AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH YO LA TENGO

CAROLINA THEATRE, DURHAM

SATURDAY, SEPT. 26

One challenge of being in a band so critically adored and long-running that you have practically become an institution is that, eventually, a new generation will step up to reassess, and possibly take down, your legacy. New Jersey's Yo La Tengo don't have to worry too much about the kids. Rather, the band shares a special connection with instant-access Millennials, thanks to its near-encyclopedic knowledge of music, both popular and obscure. To wit, the esteemed three-piece loves covers and never fails to mold its source material in strange, brilliant ways, crafting takes that fall somewhere between homage and deconstruction. Rare is the band that can get away with covering Blondie, Beat Happening, Wire and Sun Ra and still sound only like itself. Yo La Tengo's latest stopgap LP, Stuff Like That There, follows in the path of 1990's beloved Fakebook by delivering a mishmash of original material, astutely selected covers and reinterpretations of older tunes. The first single, a buttery take on The Cure standard "Friday I'm in Love," is a mixtape dream. This rare acoustic performance, featuring former Yo La member Dave Schramm, is sure to highlight the best parts of a band still pushing ahead, even after three decades. 8 p.m., $26–$64, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org. —David Ford Smith
