"Xanadu ...Xaaaaaaannnaaaaduuuuuuuuuuuu...." A film that was a landmark in the careers of all involved for all the wrong reasons, 1980's Xanadu remains one of the greatest and best films ever made by standards having nothing to do with traditional barometers for "quality." There's something simple and innocent in its tale of a muse (Olivia Newton-John) sent to Earth to inspire a young artist (The Warriors' Michael Beck, who later said this film closed all the doors previous films had opened for him) to team with a millionaire (Gene Kelly in what was mercifully his final acting role) to build a giant roller-disco that will ... I don't know, establish world peace or something. Who can argue with its mastery: Cutting-edge laser effects! A random animated sequence! ELO! And of course it destroyed the career of its director Robert Greenwald so thoroughly that he eventually turned away from fiction films toward documentary exposés on the likes of Walmart and the Koch Brothers. The film starts at 7:30 p.m.; bring your own roller skates. —Zack Smith
