Wild | Indy Week

Rated R 115 min. 2014

Grief-stricken addict Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) sets out to walk the 2,600 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in an attempt to clear up her mind and clean up her life. Adapted from the bestselling 2012 memoir, Wild toggles between Cheryl's adventures on the trail and a series of flashbacks that reveal buried trauma and a scary history of self-destructive madness. It's clear to everyone (but maybe not Cheryl) that her addictions to sex and heroin are knotted up with her unresolved grief over the traumatic death of her mother (Laura Dern). This is a beautiful film that aches with authenticity and hard-won wisdom. Director Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club) largely avoids the trappings of the middle-class pilgrimage movie, paring the story down to its bones. Credit also goes to Witherspoon, who optioned the book, produced the film and gives a subtle, insightful performance.
