Wild Grass (Les herbes folles)

Rated PG 104 min. 2010

Wild Grass is a character study with the faint outline of a noir-ish thriller in which veteran director Alain Resnais is wondering aloud: "What does it mean to get old?" "What is the nature of attraction?" "What's in a face?" Protagonist Georges (André Dussollier) finds the wallet of a stranger a stranger named Marguerite (Sabine Azéma) in a parking lot and becomes obsessed with her based on the ID photo he finds inside. The loose, captivating plot that follows brings together not only Georges and Marguerite but Georges' wife and Marguerite's co-worker. Resnais doesn't get around to resolving any of his own questions, but he has a hell of a lot of fun poking around for clues, and he's made a bright (tonally and cerebrally), funny, engaging movie in the process.
