Wild at Heart

When: Wed., May 16, 7:30 p.m. 2012

Remember back when Nicolas Cage was just known for crazy shit but was still considered a prestige actor? Observe the cross-section of Cage's caginess with the peak of David Lynch's semi-mainstream-ness in 1990's Wild at Heart, an adaptation of Barry Gifford's novel about two young folks (played by Cage and Laura Dern) from Cape Fear who find themselves dealing with violent types. Also, Crispin Glover puts cockroaches in his underwear and a dude undergoes a shotgun-induced decapitation. It's that kinda flick.

Released around the same time as Lynch's Twin Peaks on TV, it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes (to considerable protest) and achieved fair success at the box office, though not until it had been edited to avoid an MPAA X rating for violence. It also had a tie-in music video for Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game," which was featured in the film, but that video version wasn't nearly as popular as the one where Isaak gets it on with the supermodel. Enjoy Cage and Lynch and a whole bunch of crazy actors in a blender in this precursor to the likes of Natural Born Killers and True Romance. The "Cool Classics at the Colony" screening starts at 7:30 p.m. and costs $5.50. —Zack Smith
