J.K. Simmons as a drill sergeant-style jazz instructor at a music conservatory is terrifying and brilliant. His focus is on a freshman drummer played by Miles Teller, who has the chops to be great. Fletcher's cruel methods will see if he has the steel to reach the heights. It's a much darker version of the typical mentor-prodigy tale and both lead actors aren't afraid to be unlikeable. That raises the stakes in the film's later scenes, when the one-upsmanship gets truly out of hand. I thought I was going to have a panic attack during the tautly assembled final showdown. It's one of the best movies of the year.
