Whatever Brains

When: Thu., April 26, 10 p.m. 2012

The Raleigh quartet Whatever Brains have spent much of their first five years stuck inside a crazy hot streak. From a gloriously messy cassette debut through a series of warped, wooing 7-inches to two self-titled LPs in as many years, Whatever Brains have created a prickly pastiche of post-punk sneer, hardcore snot and pure pop magnetism. Last week, they offered a great four-song single for Record Store Day in which they bounced weirdly through a Double Negative blast before letting Carrboro drug-dance weirdos Waumiss string a blast of their own with gauze and samples and organ. This week, they'll release the second Whatever Brains album, a fairly perfect 13-song romp that alternately thickens the distortion to flirt with sludge (see the madhouse "Teething") and strips it away for a wild-eyed come-on (flirt with "Gentleman Caller"). Despite being one of the most restless and hence prolific bands at work right now, Whatever Brains' sprawling catalog is decidedly singular in its mix of defiance and deftness, constantly combining unstoppable hooks with unorthodox shifts and sounds. Burglar Fucker opens the 10 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin
