West End Poetry Festival Reception

When: Fri., Oct. 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m. 2013

This annual poetry festival grows a little each year while maintaining its emphasis on presenting a variety of local poets along with a few nationally recognized writers. This year, the West End Poetry Festival opens on Friday night at Flyleaf Books with a five-poet slate before moving to the Carrboro Century Center for a full day of readings, panel discussions and workshops. The Friday night Flyleaf reading includes North Carolina poets Beth Copeland, Phillip Shabazz, Claudine Moreau, Michael Chitwood and Alan Shapiro. Plan to spend the entirety of Saturday in Carrboro, though, for events run from noon to 8:30 p.m. Poets read on subjects such as nature and music, and Gabrielle Calvocoressi, the Walker Percy Fellow in Poetry at UNC-Chapel Hill, conducts a workshop. After an open mic session and a dinner reception, new Carrboro Poet Laureate Celisa Steele and Calvocoressi both read to close the evening. —Chris Vitiello
