L JÁMAL WALTON: WELCOME TO MY MADNESS RECEPTION

FRIDAY, NOV. 21, DURHAM

THE CARRACK MODERN ART—It's hard not to think of Roy Lichtenstein, the pop artist who saw the fine-art potential in pulp and romance comic book frames, when you hear the subtitle of L Jámal Walton's Carrack show, Welcome to My Madness: The Comic & Pop Art of L Jámal Walton. But Walton is up to something different, coming at the idea more from the comics-storytelling than the pop-art side of the axis. He's been writing, illustrating and self-publishing his comics in Durham—now under his new Bull City Comics imprint—for two decades, and draws influence from greats such as Marvel legend Jack Kirby, whose influential way of rendering fractal energy effects is the basis for the piece above. Meanwhile, the flyer for his Carrack show references the classic EC Comics horror anthology Tales from the Crypt. The exhibit features more than 70 works, many never before seen. This Third Friday reception is almost your last chance to view them; the show closes the next day. 6 p.m., free, 111 W. Parrish St., 704-213-6666, www.thecarrack.org. —Brian Howe
