You missed the boat on one of your endorsements. Democrats need to field the strongest candidates we have for the fall election. In the race for state treasurer, Michael Weisel has much more solid financial management credentials than the Republican contender. He is also much better qualified than either of his opponents in the May 6 Democratic primary ("Indy endorsements 2008," cover story, April 23).
Experience really should trump political ambition where the state treasurer's office is concerned. North Carolina's bond rating and state employee pension funds need professional stewardship.
Weisel has had a 30-year career in financial management that has included responsibility for more than $1.2 billion in pension fund assets for Kemper Financial Services and Wells Fargo Bank. He has held professional investment licenses from the National Association of Securities Dealers. He has served as a trustee for the N.C. Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System and the N.C. Local Government Employees' Retirement System. He has also been a member of the State Banking Commission.
No one else in the race has this level of relevant experience. Plus, Weisel has pledged not to take campaign contributions from Wall Street, now or ever. He has also pledged not to seek higher political office. This is exactly the kind of experience and integrity we need in our state treasurer.
