Screen: Special Showings

When: Wed., Feb. 8, 7 p.m. 2017

Well, mea fucking culpa. When Weiner, the deep-access documentary about sexting-felled congressman Anthony Weiner, screened at Full Frame before its theatrical run last year, I mounted something verging on an apologia in the INDY, arguing that the media's grotesque, incessant fascination with Weiner's sex life was greater than his crime of sexting between consenting adults. I still hold the newsploitation industry in contempt for its hypocritical, distracting fixation on public figures' consensual sexual habits, but any possible defense of Weiner went out the window when, last fall, it came to light that one of his sexting partners was fifteen years old. He's beyond redemption, but the documentary isn't. It remains a tense, engrossing portrait of a politician managing a humiliating downfall, as it captures the second round of sext leaks that went off like a bomb in Weiner's comeback bid. It's also a sharp study of the quivering line between public and private life. The Full Frame Winter Series brings a free screening to the Carolina; get a special prix fixe dinner (reservation required) at the Durham Hotel before or after by mentioning the Full Frame Road Show. —Brian Howe
