Weedeater, ASG, Lazer/Wulf

When: Tue., Nov. 25, 9 p.m. 2014

In the closing quarter of the last decade, Weedeater might have been the burliest, best trio in the state. On the heels of their 2007 opus to weed and whiskey, times high and hard, God Luck and Good Speed, the Wilmington crew was remarkably loud, agile and antagonistic. Frontman "Dixie" Dave Collins led the band through red-eyed twists and turns with his blown-out bass, mirrored perfectly by hyper-distorted guitar and chased by very heavy drumming. They've since backed off the extremes of their music and lifestyle, mitigating their narcotic suspension of total disbelief a bit. But ASG, who struggled during that same period to find a Southern metal identity of their own, have taken the lead. After a long break for regrouping, they emerged last year with Blood Drive, their Relapse Records debut and a magnetic, indelible batch of riff-worshiping gems. Onstage, they don't incite the fervor and awe of Weedeater in their prime, but the leads are sharp and the vocals crisp—the sign of once-maniacal metal, rising wonderfully into maturity. Atlanta's racing and bracing Lazer/Wulf open. 9 p.m., $15–$18, 224 S. Blount St., 919-821-1120, www.the-pour-house.com. —Grayson Haver Currin
