William H. Johnson

N.C. Central's Museum of Art--The work of William H. Johnson--South Carolina native and pioneering Harlem Renaissance artist--arrives for the first time in the Triangle via N.C. Central's Museum of Art. Johnson attended the National Academy of Design, but he turned his back on his academic training to pursue original expression through Southern landscapes, urban nightlife and Biblical themes. More than 50 paintings, watercolors and prints--many on loan from Hampton University, Howard University and Morgan State University--are on display through April 21. Today, the gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gay Sex in the '70s

Unc-Chapel Hill--Joseph Lovett's frank, nostalgic and rueful documentary Gay Sex in the '70s is a look back at a few freewheeling years of gay liberation in New York. Drawing on archival films and photos, as well as recollections of those who were there, Lovett's film is a vivid account of cruising the Chelsea piers, quickies in the meatpacking district and weekends on Fire Island. It screens at 8 p.m. in 111 Carroll Hall . Admission is free. --David Fellerath
