STEPHEN GREY AND ARIEL DORFMAN
DUKE CAMPUS—One of the more chilling subplots of the Global War on Terror is the involvement of private aircraft out of a Smithfield airstrip. As Stephen Grey has documented in Ghost Plane: The True Story of the CIA Rendition and Torture Program, an aviation company operating out of that facility has been engaged in transporting secretly and illegally detained individuals to foreign countries where they will be tortured. Grey and Duke professor Ariel Dorfman will appear at a special event from noon-5:30 p.m. in Room 240 of the John Hope Franklin Center. VOICES OF SUDAN
Internationalist Books—Between ongoing genocide and religious persecution and recent, devastating floods, the people of Sudan have had no shortage of problems. Author David Johnson's hard-hitting photographs in Voices of Sudan put real faces to the story of struggle. With all proceeds from the book funneled directly to the country, Johnson presents both the problem and part of the solution. The discussion and reading starts at 7 p.m. For more info, go to www.internationalistbooks.com. —Karlie Justus
