Chapel Hill
White Rabbits
Local 506— Indie-rock angst: This New York six-piece slams piano chords, pounds its drums and shouts its vocals. White Rabbits makes atmospheric dirges of gloom-ridden rock 'n' roll, where thunder rumbles just beneath growling guitars and clangorous pianos. With Via Audio at 9 p.m. for $8. —Kathy Justice

Lee Smith
McIntyre's Fine Books—Get your fix of N.C. literature tonight when local author Lee Smith reads from her latest book On Agate Hill, set on a post-Civil War Hillsborough plantation. Just out in paperback, the novel was inspired by Alice Gerrard's The Road to Agate Hill album, which Smith listened to while writing the tragic story, which follows an orphaned young girl who passively watches drama unfold from the war-torn plantation's front porch. Smith has other readings this fall: Monday, Nov. 19, at Regulator Bookshop and Thursday, Dec. 6, at Quail Ridge Books and Music. Tonight's reading starts at 7 p.m. Go to for more info. —Karlie Justus
