NC Powerdown

610 Kirby St.--According to the National Gas Temperature Map, North Carolina has some of the lowest gasoline prices per gallon, but--at just under $3--it's still not cheap. And the world's oil problem isn't only about here-and-now prices or international trade policies. More so, it's about decreasing overall consumption and the detrimental effect the combustion of fossil fuels continues to have on our environment. NC Powerdown--a second-Wednesdays group in Carrboro--discusses these issues and more at 6:30 p.m., assuaging new members as they work to decrease their energy needs. This month, the group heads to Raleigh, as N.C. State professor Will Kirby discusses his work in permaculture. For more, see

Alex Skolnick Trio

Local 506--This isn't just jazz: This is jazz with a chemical buzz. With a penchant for the unique and a lust for the unfamiliar, the Alex Skolnick Trio has the amazing ability to transform just about any song into a well-formulated jazz tune. Obviously, though, KISS got to Skolnick--a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Lamb of God collaborator--before Coltrane entered his picture. And yes, KISS has brought along a few friends, too. Expect reworkings of Judas Priest, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. Pay $10. --Kathy Justice
