DURHAM
GREG MORTENSON
CAROLINA FRIENDS SCHOOL—Greg Mortenson is an adventurer for the 21st century. While George Mallory attempted Everest "because it was there," Mortenson headed out to the war-torn mountainous regions of South Asia to lend a hand by building secular, girl-friendly schools, often at considerable personal risk. In hardback his book was called Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Fight Terrorism and Build Nations ... One School at a Time. Perhaps in anticipation of a post-Bush world, for the paperback edition Mortenson altered the subtitle to One Man's Mission to Promote Peace ... One School at a Time. The paperback has just entered the New York Times bestseller list, and Carolina Friends School expects a big crowd in the gym. The event is free, and cookies and tea will be served. —David Fellerath
