DAN AND LIA PERJOVSCHI WITH ANDREI CODRESCU
NASHER MUSEUM—An unexpected combination of Romanian political cartoons and performance art make up this husband-and-wife duo's repertoire, which the Nasher Museum captures at its State of Mind: Dan and Lia Perjovschi exhibition. Born in 1961, the couple met as teenaged art students and together endured the death throes of the hated Ceaucescu regime, which finally expired in 1989. Their experience under the Romanian state—a rule that was enforced by the feared Securitate—led to an abiding interest in political art and the examination of surveillance and censorship. While Dan Perjovschi works in the area of large-scale drawing installations, Lia spent many years as a performance artist, exploring the physical manifestations of state repression. During the week of Aug. 20, the couple will create works in the Nasher. Tonight at 6:30, visitors can get a peek at the new works by attending the opening party and lecture by author and NPR commentator Andrei Codrescu. Stop by to mingle at the cash bar with Romanian dignitaries. It's open to the public and free with museum admission.
