Chapel Hill
NIGHTLIGHT—A polynya is a region of open water surrounded by ice, a bang-on metaphor for the Triangle band of the same name's chilly but fluid indie rock. No one knows what a "Waumiss" is, but judging from their uproarious YouTube video for "Nightingale," it must have something to do with mixing samples and ramshackle instrumentation into infectious pop ditties. Waumiss is the latest project from lo-fi pop duo Shallow Be Thy Name's Clarque (also of The Kingsbury Manx) and Caroline Blomquist. The lexicon unfurls at 9:30 p.m. with a $5 cover. —Brian Howe

PROGRESS ENERGY CENTERAin't Misbehavin': The Fats Waller Musical Show is based on the music and feel of 1930s Harlem, where swing was nurtured and cats like Thomas "Fats" Waller kept the clubs and dives boppin' with a beat that was the heart of the time. This Broadway revue evokes the humor and energy of the period, using Waller's songs—including the titular hit—that were popular throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy presents their production under the direction of Matthew-Jason Willis and McCrae Hardy. For more info, visit or call 834-4000. —Megan Stein
