James Taylor
Walnut Creek Amphitheatre—Not surprisingly, the last two major projects from Boston-born, Carolina-raised songwriter James Taylor—who turned 60 earlier this year—have deferred mostly to his legacy: Last year's One Man Band was a spare live album taken from a several-day stand at a theater in Massachusetts, recasting the hits with a piano, a guitar and occasionally a drum machine. But this year's Band of Legends aggrandizes Taylor's patrician folk with horns, electric guitars, back-up singers and multiple percussionists. The big band tackles covers and standards during its first set, with reworked Taylor tunes for the second half. If there's a riot in Raleigh Wednesday night, it was fueled by Chardonnay and Sweet Baby James deciding not to play "Carolina on My Mind." The 7:30 p.m. show costs a surprisingly reasonable $20-$47. —Grayson Currin
