Walking with Dinosaurs: The Live Experience
RBC Center—You don't have to be 7 years old to appreciate the spectacle of 15 life-sized, snarling, growling, stomping dinosaurs. The $20-million arena show Walking with Dinosaurs: The Live Experience comes to the RBC Center today through Oct. 26 as part of a North American tour. Inspired by a BBC TV series, the show uses impressive animatronic replicas of your favorites dinos—including Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, and the 36-foot-tall Brachiosaurus—to dramatize the climactic and tectonic changes that marked the creatures' 200 million years on earth. The theatrical presentation, complete with special effects, demonstrates how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how herbivores fended off predators. That's right, an arena show educating the public about evolution—don't tell Sarah Palin. Adult tickets run $32.50-$69.50; family discounts available. Blue Door
Playmakers Rep—The prolific young dramatist Tanya Barfield writes plays faster than theater companies can keep up. Blue Door received its New York premiere only two seasons ago, and it's been performed around the country and in Zimbabwe, and, beginning tonight, it gets its Southeastern premiere. Barfield, in the meantime, has written Of Equal Measure, which concerns racism in the Woodrow Wilson administration and premiered last summer in Los Angeles. The show on view at PlayMakers tonight is billed as "a play and original songs" and it concerns an African-American college professor on the verge of splitting with his wife. The issue at hand is the husband's unwillingness to embrace his heritage; during the course of an evening, he's visited by ancestor-spirits. Trezana Beverley directs. For more information, visit Among the special events are a morning matinee for students on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and a post-show talkback that evening. —David Fellerath
