Chapel Hill
Secondhand Freespace
Local 506—Round Two of the Triangle's original series of free, open discussion forums about the music scene and business, Secondhand Freespace kicks off this evening with a fresh group of panelists to talk about press and promotion. The first session, held in late August, focused primarily on booking bands (both locally and nationwide), and the second installment continues the touring-band narrative, letting bands learn how to get ink once the bill is booked.Longtime News & Observer critic Dave Menconi joins former Merge publicist Martin Hall, Jamie Williams of the Daily Tar Heel and the Independent Weekly's music editor Grayson Currin to discuss the trials and tribulations of band public relations. Trekky Records' Martin Anderson moderate. Glenn Boothe, owner of Chapel Hill music staple, the Local 506, and one of the minds behind the series, says the discussion has a two-fold purpose: "One of the goals is for the local bands to have a better understanding of what writers are looking for, in terms of press packet materials, etc., but also we wanted to help put a face on some of the writers who operate behind the scene." Come meet yr press at 7:30 p.m. —Kathy Justice
