Wanderlust: Photos By Alec Soth

When: Dec. 23-June 30 2013

Don't just sit around the flatscreen with visiting relatives. Schlep them over to the art museum. While most art venues coast or close through the end of the year, our state museum is opening a new show two days before Christmas. Wanderlust: Photographs by Alec Soth (up through June 30) caps a strong year of photography with a short look at the work of the large-format storyteller from Minneapolis in mid-career. Fifteen photographs are on display from his "Sleeping by the Mississippi" and "NIAGARA" series. For the former, Soth traveled the Mississippi River from his northern home to Louisiana over four years, capturing images of people and places along the way as well as a meditative sense of the time he was devoting to the project. His compositional directness pushes every image toward allegory. "NIAGARA" nudges through the tacky surface of the wedding/ honeymoon culture around Niagara Falls in images of newlyweds and hotels, playing the inspiring power of the falls against the bloodlessness of the surrounding landscape. After Wanderlust, duck into the Project 35 theater to check out the latest in global video art. —Chris Vitiello
