Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" | Stage | Indy Week

Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself"

When: Sat., May 4, 1 p.m. 2013

If the extent of your knowledge about the great American vagabond poet Walt Whitman is that he wrote that poem about Abraham Lincoln dying (you know, the one from ninth-grade English class), ArtsCenter Stage's upcoming production of Walt will surely open your eyes. Written at the Iowa Playwrights Workshop by William W. Whitman, sixth cousin of the titular poet, the play (which features music by composer Jonathan Price) tells of Walt's journey from Long Island to Brooklyn to New Orleans to the Civil War, and his embrace of American democracy and diversity in the process. This production will be the play's Southeast premiere. It doesn't open till May 10, but gear up with this community reading of the poet's "Song of Myself." —Emma Miller
