Wale, Gloriana

When: Thu., Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m. 2012

ESPN's First Take co-hosts Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless might spend 95 percent of their airtime shouting and differing with each other about Tim Tebow and LeBron James. One thing they do agree on, however is that they both love frequent guest commentator and D.C. rapper Wale—so much so that he and his MMG labelmate, Stalley, were tapped to record the show's new theme song, "Every Word Great."

But is Wale's opening, spoken-word piece on Rick Ross' new "Diced Pineapples" single just as great as his sports riffs? Eh, it's the hopeless artificiality one would expect on a song that compares women to canned fruit, so probably not. Still, with the sex-snack line "I'm trying to eat, and we don't need a spoon," he properly nails both the song's closing verse (and the girl) just as he did on the recent hit single "Lotus Flower Bomb" and 2009's "Pretty Girls." In Wale's world, women, go-go music and sports coexist—and let's be honest, that's really what homecoming is about: old flings, parties and football. So who better to be the admiral of N.C. State's homecoming Pack Howl Concert and pep rally than Wale, the prideful, sex-for-sport party poet? Award-winning country trio Gloriana opens. —Eric Tullis
