Vusi Mahlasela

When: Wed., April 1, 8 p.m. 2015

Known in South Africa simply as “The Voice,” Vusi Mahlasela is a legendary singer-songwriter whose songs helped inspire opposition to Apartheid. He now communicates the nation’s history to the post-apartheid generation, singing with authority in English, Sotho and Swahili. Some have called his music African folk, while Mahlasela prefers “the people’s music,” as it’s full of personal and political storytelling, strife and sorrow, love and celebration. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
