Vox Luminis

When: Sun., Nov. 30, 8 p.m. 2014

Johann Sebastian Bach’s passions and cantatas are repertory standards, familiar to church- and concertgoers alike. This Duke Performances show by the youthful Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis fleshes out an earlier chapter of the German sacred Baroque. The program “Heinrich Schütz & the Bach Family” includes oft-unheard works by J.S. himself, a Bach uncle, cousin and father-in-law. The centerpiece is Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien, which Vox Luminis has issued in a glowing recording. Bach’s great precursor, Schütz, is in top form with the plaintive harmonies of the Musikalische Exequien, funeral music that’s alternately lavish and austere. —Will Robin
