VaudeVillain Revue

When: Fri., Dec. 30, 9:30 p.m. 2011

Here's a holiday cocktail for you: Mix equal amounts of vaudeville and burlesque, shake vigorously with a dark cabaret and add a twist of Tim Burton. The VaudeVillain Revue returns to serve its concoction of neo-bygone magic, mentalism, pole and hoop dancing, and enough ribbed bustiers to beat the band, reprising a raucous variety show with a holiday bent. The VaudeVillains transport audiences back to the capital-M Modern times of fin de siècle and Roaring '20s variety troupes that fatalistically celebrated irrationality and hilarity in the face of the industrial acceleration of life—making a claim for its appropriateness again as our virtual lives rival our real ones. Founder Virginia Scare might have wowed you with the monthly variety acts she has programmed at the Black Flower bar in Raleigh, featuring aerialists, mad actors and musicians and dancers galore. The show is co-sponsored by Cary's Galaxy Cinema, which will provide free popcorn and give away movie tickets, and Aradia Fitness, a "pole dancing and sensual fitness company" that will dispense prizes. Tickets to the 9:30 p.m. show are $10 in advance or $12 at the door; visit southlandballroom.com. —Chris Vitiello
