Updated: Language Arts play free show Friday

Hip-hop act Language Arts will play a free concert at CCB Plaza in downtown Durham Friday evening. The performances are part of "Durham, Be Easy," a multi-disciplinary, multi-genre celebration meant "to promote a relaxed and stimulating environment through positive reinforcement and cultural expression." Kim Arrington, DJ Tyler Hipnosis, Langston Fuze, the Bull City Slam Team and J. Bully will also participate in the event, which is advertised as family-friendly.

Language Arts organized the concert as a response to recent violence in Durham. "DBE isn't the typical non-violence speak-out," co-coordinator and Language Arts member Aden Darity said in a press release. "I wanted to lead by example by presenting the whole community with a day that is the opposite of violent—a day of celebration and relaxation. It's a hot summer, people just have to keep their cool."

The show runs from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and is sponsored by City of Durham Parks and Recreation, The Jim Crow Experience Project and Black Poetry Theatre. No official word yet on set times, but for more information and updates, see Durham, Be Easy's Web site.

CORRECTION:Contrary to a press release from event organizers, The Mountain Goats will not be playing Friday's Durham, Be Easy celebration.
