Untold Durham

When: Tue., Oct. 9, 7 p.m. 2012

Last week saw the launch of 27 Views of Durham, a new book of writings about the Bull City. In the course of reviewing it last week, we marveled at the extraordinary work of local historian Gary Kueber. Still a young man and not a professional academic, he nonetheless he is assembling a remarkable online archive of Durham's changing faces. What started as a blog called Endangered Durham morphed into opendurham.org, an astonishing compendium of growth, decay, ambition and folly, all shot through with Kueber's mild-mannered but unmistakable progressive politics; he's often dismayed about racism, real estate greed and car-centric development, but he tempers it with a keen sense of possibility. He steps out as a public lecturer with this 7pm presentation called Untold Durham, a benefit for Open Durham, Museum of Durham History, Carolina Theatre and Preservation Durham. Accordingly, the tickets aren't cheap at $35, but as these things go, they aren't too steep either, and the value can't be beat. —David Fellerath

Price: $35
