Unicron, Dear Desolate, Egoist, Friends as Enemies

When: Fri., Dec. 5, 8 p.m. 2014

Featuring four area metalcore and progressive metal acts that aim squarely for the T-shirt racks of your local Hot Topic, this bill offers a spotlight for a breed of area heaviness that splits from the more prevalent hardcore and sludge strains. Raleigh’s Unicron and Dear Desolate specialize in tough-as-steel twists and turns that take them to exclamatory, shout-along passages. Greensboro’s Egoist stretches its technical ambitions with high-minded atmospheres and complicated rhythms. Most interesting, though, might be Friends as Enemies, who connect their breakdowns and pop-friendly refrains with verses of punk pugnacity. —Grayson Haver Currin
