UNC Humanities: Spotlight on Scholars

When: Tue., Nov. 27, 4:30-6 p.m. 2012

This is one of those things that is inordinately fascinating to me, thanks to a childhood spent in a poorly insulated house surrounded by pollen-filled flowers, filled with my dusty comic book collection, and later home to three cats owned by my parents. Short version: I spent most of my life congested, something I've only somewhat recovered from by living alone in a condo, though the nasal part of my voice has never completely vanished.

If you must learn more about the substance regularly expelled this time of year during temperature drops, check out this UNC Spotlight on Scholars event with physics and astronomy professor Richard Superfine—a name that screams "1970s action hero" if ever there was one. He'll explain how snot is a vital element of health that covers almost every cell of your body, and how we are only now starting to understand its uses. You'll come away either enlightened or desperately feeling a need for a Silkwood shower, or both. The 4:30 p.m. event costs $18 in advance and $20 at the door, or $8 for UNC General Alumni Association members. You'll get your money's worth of snot for that! I am totally changing my name to "Richard Superfine" after this. —Zack Smith

Price: $18-20
