Twelve Angry Men

When: May 10-12 2013

The TV play that launched a thousand knockoffs, Reginald Rose's classic tale of a jury hung up by a lone holdout set the standard for courtroom dramas. The strength of the material comes from how it combines the main tenets of drama—high stakes, a ticking clock, action driven by character—with a thoughtful explanation of the methodology of the legal system, where the purpose is not to determine guilt or innocence so much as reasonable doubt. That said, as a few essayists have pointed out, the never-seen defendant in this case probably was guilty. There are a lot of coincidences that have to add up to get him off the hook there. Decide for yourself in this local production by Studio A. Note: The well-known title notwithstanding, this production will include women in its jury. This is the 21st century, after all. —Zack Smith
