Turtle Island Tales

When: Sat., Nov. 20, 11 a.m. 2010

ArtsCenter—The N.C.-based Hobey Ford, one of the great puppeteers of our time, has created a mixture of shadow and life-size puppets to present songs and stories from Native American culture in this program. From the Pacific Northwest comes the folk tale "Raven Steals the Sun," which tells of a greedy chief who keeps the sun in a box for his own use. "The Gift of Fire" comes from the Chumash people of central California and depicts mankind's first experiences with taming this vital force. Puppets—especially shadow puppets—are deceivingly simplistic, but the art involved in the creation and execution of Ford's work will transport you into the middle of his majestic mythology. The show is appropriate for pre-K and up and starts at 11 a.m. Tickets are $8 for youth (free for children 2 and under) and $10 for adults. $1 discount for advance purchase. —Christina Cass
